Northern Emerald Toucanet, Aulacorhynchus prasinus, is a toucan of Middle America, breeding from south-western and eastern Mexico to north-western Colombia. It is mainly a bird of humid montane forest, but it also uses secondary forest, shrublands, pastures and plantations. This species is non-migratory and often gathers in groups of up to about 10. It nests in tree cavities, including old woodpecker holes, and the breeding season runs from March to July. The female is usually smaller and has a shorter bill. The species was described by Gould in 1833.
