Northern Masked Weaver

Ploceus princeps

The Northern Masked Weaver (Ploceus princeps) is a small songbird native to sub-Saharan Africa. This species is known for its striking breeding plumage, with the male displaying a bright yellow head and underparts, and a black mask around the eyes. Females and non-breeding males have more subdued plumage. Northern Masked Weavers are highly social birds, often found in colonies where they construct intricately woven, gourd-shaped nests. They primarily feed on seeds and insects, foraging in open grasslands, savannas, and wetlands. Despite their widespread distribution, habitat loss and fragmentation pose threats to their populations.
