Northern Masked Weaver

Ploceus taeniopterus

The Northern Masked Weaver (Ploceus taeniopterus) is a small songbird found in sub-Saharan Africa. This species is known for its striking breeding plumage, with the male displaying a bright yellow head and underparts, and a black mask around the eyes. The female is more subtly colored with a streaked brown and yellow plumage. These weavers are highly social birds and are often found in large colonies, particularly in savannas, grasslands, and open woodlands. They construct intricate, woven nests from grass and other plant materials, often suspended from the tips of branches. The Northern Masked Weaver primarily feeds on seeds and insects, foraging in flocks and occasionally visiting bird feeders. While not currently considered threatened, habitat loss and fragmentation are potential threats to this species.
