Northern Wheatear

Oenanthe frenata

The Northern Wheatear is a small, migratory bird found in open, rocky habitats across Europe, Asia, and North America. With a distinctive black mask and white rump, this species is known for its striking appearance. During the breeding season, it inhabits high-altitude areas with rocky outcrops and sparse vegetation, while in winter, it migrates to sub-Saharan Africa. Northern Wheatears are insectivorous and often forage by hopping on the ground, capturing insects and spiders. Despite being a widespread species, the Northern Wheatear faces threats from habitat loss and climate change, leading to population declines in some regions.
