Nubian Bustard

Neotis nuba (Cretzschmar, 1826)

Nubian Bustard Neotis nuba breeds across Africa from Mauritania to eastern Sudan, with a range that follows the southern edge of the Sahara and the northern Sahel. It lives in dry savanna, semi-arid scrub and other sparsely vegetated desert-margin habitats. The bird is a medium-large bustard, and males and females differ markedly in size. It is also known for a long, broad sandy-rufous stripe on the crown, and for a forked-tail display in which the male walks with the tail raised vertically and the wing-tips set between the fork.
