Dryobates nuttallii
Nuttall's Woodpecker is a small to medium-sized woodpecker found in oak woodlands and riparian areas of western North America. It has a black and white barred back, a red crown in males, and a white face with black markings. This species is known for its drumming behavior, using its bill to create rhythmic patterns on trees. Nuttall's Woodpeckers primarily feed on insects and larvae found under bark and in wood, using their strong bills to excavate. They are also known to nest in cavities in trees, where they raise their young. While not currently considered threatened, habitat loss and degradation are potential threats to their populations.
