Oahu Akepa

Loxops wolstenholmei Rothschild, 1893

Fringillidae — Finches, Euphonias

Oahu Akepa, Loxops wolstenholmei, was an extinct finch endemic to Oahu in the Hawaiian Islands. It lived in the island’s mountain forests, especially in dense stands of ʻōhiʻa and koa. The bird was recorded across the 19th century and survived until around 1900. It was a brick-red Hawaiian honeycreeper, and the females were mainly grey with a greenish tint. Like other Loxops species, it had a slight crossbill, which it used to open buds while feeding on nectar and insects.
