Ocellated Poorwill

Nyctiphrynus ocellatus

The Ocellated Poorwill is a small nocturnal bird found in the forests and woodlands of Central and South America. It is known for its distinctive call that resembles the sound 'poor-will' and its large, dark eyes. This species is primarily insectivorous, feeding on a variety of flying insects during the night. Ocellated Poorwills are well-camouflaged birds with mottled brown and gray plumage, allowing them to blend into their surroundings. They are known for their unique resting behavior of perching lengthwise on branches, resembling a log. Despite their widespread distribution, their elusive nature makes them difficult to study and monitor.
