Okinawa Woodpecker, Dendrocopos noguchii, breeds in northern Okinawa in the southern Ryukyu Islands of Japan. It is a woodpecker of mature subtropical evergreen forest, especially the undisturbed old forest of Yambaru’s central mountains. The bird is dark brown with red-tipped feathers and white marks on the primaries, while the head is paler brown. Males have a dark red crown and females a blackish-brown one. It was once placed in a separate genus, but is now included in Dendrocopos.
