Oriental Stork

Ciconia boyciana Swinhoe, 1873

Oriental Stork, Ciconia boyciana, is a stork of the Palearctic that breeds in south-east Siberia, north-east China, Korea and Japan, and spends the non-breeding season in south-east China. First described by Swinhoe in 1873, it belongs to the family Ciconiidae. It is closely allied to the European white stork and was once treated as part of that species. The Oriental Stork is usually larger than its relative, and the adult has red skin around the eye, a whitish iris and a black bill.
