Ou

Psittirostra psittacea (Gmelin, JF, 1789)

Fringillidae — Finches, Euphonias

Ou, Psittirostra psittacea, was a Hawaiian honeycreeper from the Hawaiian Islands in the Pacific Ocean. It was endemic to the island group and is now extinct. The bird was once found across the islands, but its numbers fell sharply during the twentieth century. Its bill was notably unusual and appears to have been suited to taking the fruits of Freycinetia arborea. It also fed on other fruits, buds, flowers and insects. The last recorded sighting was in 1989, and later assessments confirmed its extinction.
