Owston's Rail

Hypotaenidia owstoni

Owston's Rail (Hypotaenidia owstoni) is a small, elusive bird species found in the forests and wetlands of the Mariana Islands. This secretive bird is known for its distinctive call, which is often the only indication of its presence. Owston's Rail has a mottled brown plumage that provides excellent camouflage in its dense, marshy habitat. It is primarily a ground-dwelling bird, foraging for insects, small invertebrates, and seeds in the leaf litter and undergrowth. Due to habitat loss and predation by introduced species, Owston's Rail is considered vulnerable and is in need of conservation efforts to ensure its survival.
