Painted Buttonquail, Turnix varius, is a buttonquail of Australasia, breeding in south-western, south-eastern and eastern Australia, as well as Tasmania. It lives on the ground in grassy forests and woodlands. The female is the more striking bird, with red eyes and white markings on the crown, face and breast, plus chestnut shoulders marked with fine white streaks. The male is a little smaller and less vivid. The species was first described by Latham in 1801. Two subspecies are recognised, and one is confined to the Houtman Abrolhos islands.
