Painted Sandgrouse, Pterocles indicus, is a sandgrouse of India in the Oriental Region, where it breeds. It is a ground-living bird of dry country, using rough grassland, rocky ground and scrub. The species has a plump build, a small head and short legs. Males and females differ in plumage. The male shows an orange bill, a black band on the white forehead, a white bare eye-ring and a broad black-and-white chest band. The female is greyer brown with darker brown and white markings.
