Podargus papuensis
The Papuan Frogmouth (Podargus papuensis) is a nocturnal bird native to the rainforests and woodlands of New Guinea and nearby islands. This species is known for its distinctive appearance, with a large head, wide mouth, and cryptic plumage that provides excellent camouflage against tree bark. Papuan Frogmouths are primarily insectivorous, feeding on a variety of nocturnal insects and small vertebrates. They are solitary birds and are often observed perched motionless on tree branches during the day. Their haunting, nocturnal calls are a characteristic feature of the rainforest nights. Despite their widespread distribution, the Papuan Frogmouth faces threats from habitat loss and deforestation.
