Papuan Frogmouth

Toxorhamphus novaeguineae

The Papuan Frogmouth (Toxorhamphus novaeguineae) is a nocturnal bird found in the rainforests and woodlands of New Guinea and nearby islands. This species is known for its cryptic plumage, large frog-like mouth, and distinctive call resembling a deep, resonant 'oom'. It primarily feeds on insects and small vertebrates, using its wide gape to catch prey. The Papuan Frogmouth is a master of camouflage, blending seamlessly with tree bark and branches during the day. It is a solitary bird, often seen perched motionless on a branch. Despite its owl-like appearance, the Papuan Frogmouth is not closely related to owls, but belongs to the frogmouth family Podargidae.
