Papuan Lorikeet

Oreopsittacus arfaki

The Papuan Lorikeet (Oreopsittacus arfaki) is a small parrot species native to the montane forests of New Guinea. It is characterized by its vibrant plumage, with a predominantly green body, red forehead, and blue crown. These lorikeets are known for their acrobatic flight and their distinctive high-pitched calls. They primarily feed on nectar, pollen, and fruits, using their specialized brush-tipped tongues to extract nectar from flowers. They also play a vital role in pollination within their forest habitat. Due to habitat loss and trapping for the pet trade, the Papuan Lorikeet faces conservation concerns.
