Papuan Owlet-nightjar

Aegotheles albertisi

The Papuan Owlet-nightjar (Aegotheles albertisi) is a small, nocturnal bird native to the rainforests of New Guinea and nearby islands. This species is known for its distinctive call, a series of short, rapid whistles that are often heard at night. The Papuan Owlet-nightjar has a cryptic plumage that provides excellent camouflage among the dense foliage of its forest habitat. It preys on insects and other small invertebrates, which it captures in flight using its agile and silent hunting technique. Despite its small size, the Papuan Owlet-nightjar is an important predator in its ecosystem and plays a role in controlling insect populations.
