Peruvian Pelican

Pelecanus thagus

The Peruvian Pelican (Pelecanus thagus) is a large seabird found along the western coast of South America, from southern Ecuador to central Chile. It is known for its distinctive long bill, large throat pouch, and black and white plumage. These pelicans are highly social birds, often seen in large flocks, and are known for their graceful soaring and plunge-diving feeding behavior. They primarily feed on fish and can often be seen foraging in coastal waters. The Peruvian Pelican is vulnerable to habitat loss, disturbance, and pollution, and conservation efforts are underway to protect its breeding and foraging areas.
