Pheasant Pigeon

Macropygia magna

The Pheasant Pigeon (Macropygia magna) is a large, ground-dwelling pigeon species found in the forests and woodlands of New Guinea and nearby islands. It is known for its striking iridescent green and purple plumage, with a distinctive white patch on the wings. Pheasant Pigeons are primarily frugivorous, feeding on a variety of fruits and seeds, and are often observed foraging on the forest floor. They are known for their distinctive cooing calls and are considered a symbol of beauty and grace in many cultures. Due to habitat loss and hunting, the Pheasant Pigeon's conservation status is listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN.
