Pied Cormorant

Phalacrocorax varius

The Pied Cormorant, scientifically known as Phalacrocorax varius, is a medium-sized seabird found in coastal regions of Australia and New Zealand. It has a distinctive black and white plumage, with a black body and white patches on the face, neck, and underside. This species is known for its excellent diving abilities, using its webbed feet to propel itself underwater in search of fish and crustaceans. Pied Cormorants typically nest in colonies on coastal cliffs or islands, and they are often seen perched on rocks or jetties, drying their wings in the sun. Despite facing threats from habitat disturbance and pollution, the Pied Cormorant is currently listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List.
