Pied Cormorant

Phalacrocorax capillatus

The Pied Cormorant, scientifically known as Phalacrocorax capillatus, is a seabird species found in coastal regions of Australia and New Zealand. It is a medium-sized cormorant with a distinctive black and white plumage. These birds are skilled divers and primarily feed on fish, diving underwater to catch their prey. They are often seen perched on rocks or in trees near water, where they dry their wings after fishing. The Pied Cormorant is a colonial nester, breeding in large groups on offshore islands or coastal cliffs. Despite facing threats such as habitat degradation and disturbance at breeding sites, the population of this species is currently stable.
