Egretta picata
The Pied Heron (Egretta picata) is a small heron found in the wetlands and coastal areas of Australia, New Guinea, and nearby islands. It is easily recognized by its striking black and white plumage, with a black head, back, and wings, and a white belly and neck. This species is known for its distinctive hunting behavior, often standing motionless in shallow water before striking at small fish, crustaceans, and insects. The Pied Heron nests in colonies in tall trees near water, and its breeding season is often synchronized with the wet season. While not currently considered threatened, habitat loss and disturbance pose potential risks to its populations.
