Pied Imperial Pigeon

Ducula myristicivora

The Pied Imperial Pigeon, scientifically known as Ducula myristicivora, is a large pigeon species found in the tropical and subtropical forests and mangroves of Southeast Asia and the Pacific. These pigeons are known for their striking black and white plumage, with a distinct contrast between the dark wings and back and the white underparts. They have a prominent white patch on the nape and a red orbital ring around their eyes. Pied Imperial Pigeons primarily feed on fruits and are important seed dispersers in their ecosystems. They are often observed in large flocks, especially during the breeding season when they form noisy and bustling colonies on offshore islands. Despite facing threats from habitat loss and hunting, their populations are currently stable.
