Pied Oystercatcher

Haematopus longirostris

The Pied Oystercatcher (Haematopus longirostris) is a distinctive shorebird found along the coastlines of Australia. It has a striking black-and-white plumage, with a long, bright orange bill and pink legs. This species is known for its loud, distinctive call and its characteristic feeding behavior, using its long bill to probe for mollusks and other invertebrates in the intertidal zone. The Pied Oystercatcher is often seen in pairs or small groups and is known for its strong territorial behavior during the breeding season. Despite its coastal habitat, it is also known to forage in estuaries and occasionally inland wetlands.
