Pied-winged Swallow, Hirundo leucosoma, breeds in Africa from Senegal and Gambia to Nigeria. It is a member of the swallow family and was first described by Swainson in 1837. The bird is marked by glossy steel-blue upperparts and a white wing patch, the feature that sets it apart from other West African swallows. Its underside is largely white, and the tail shows steel-blue tones with green reflections. Females and young birds have shorter tails, while juveniles are browner-headed and less vivid overall.
