Malacorhynchus membranaceus
The Pink-eared Duck, scientifically known as Malacorhynchus membranaceus, is a unique waterfowl species native to Australia. This duck is easily recognized by its distinctive pink patch of feathers behind the eye, which gives it its common name. It has a peculiar flat, spatula-shaped bill that it uses to filter small invertebrates and plankton from the water. The Pink-eared Duck is often found in shallow, freshwater wetlands and is known for its gregarious behavior, often forming large flocks. This species is a proficient swimmer and can often be seen diving for food. Despite being a relatively common species, the Pink-eared Duck faces threats from habitat loss and degradation.
