Pinnated Bittern, Botaurus pinnatus, is a heron of Middle America and South America, from eastern Mexico to northern Argentina. It belongs to the family Ardeidae and was first described by Wagler in 1829. Also called the South American bittern, it is a widespread bird of low-lying freshwater country, though it is seldom encountered. Its range includes reed beds, marshes, flooded grassland, ditches and the edges of lakes, and it also uses rice and sugarcane plantations. It is a solitary breeder and is almost entirely a wet season nesting bird.
