It was first described by Nelson in 1912. The bird is best known from Cerro Pirre, Cerro Sapo and the Serranía de Jungurudó, and it lives in montane evergreen forest, elfin forest, bamboo stands and vine tangles. It uses the canopy and forest edge, and occurs from 800 to 1,650 m. It is believed to remain in the same area throughout the year.
