Picumnus castelnau Malherbe, 1862
Plain-breasted Piculet, Picumnus castelnau, is a woodpecker of the Picidae family that breeds in western Amazonia in South America, mainly in Peru and just across the border into extreme south-eastern Colombia and western Brazil. It was described by Malherbe in 1862. It is tied to river islands and river margins, and also uses nearby secondary growth, with records from the edges of pastures and gardens. It is most often associated with the canopy of young Cecropia, Cassia and Mimosa on islands, and has been recorded up to 1,000 m.
