Plain-capped Starthroat

Pityriasis gymnocephala

The Plain-capped Starthroat is a medium-sized hummingbird found in Central and South America. It is named for the plain cap of greenish-bronze feathers on its head. The throat of the male is a vibrant iridescent purple, while the female has a white throat with black spots. These birds are often found in open woodland, forest edges, and gardens, where they feed on nectar from flowers and catch insects in mid-air. They are known for their rapid and agile flight, often hovering while feeding. The Plain-capped Starthroat is not currently considered to be at risk, and its population is believed to be stable.
