Plain Chachalaca

Ortalis vetula

The Plain Chachalaca is a medium-sized bird found in the southern United States and Central America. It has a distinctive appearance with a long tail, grayish-brown plumage, and a red wattle on its throat. These birds are known for their loud and raucous calls, which they use to communicate with each other. They are primarily herbivorous, feeding on fruits, seeds, and leaves. Plain Chachalacas are typically found in dense scrub and woodland habitats, where they forage for food and build their nests. While they are not currently considered to be at risk, habitat loss and hunting pose potential threats to their populations.
