Plains-wanderer

Pedionomus torquatus

The Plains-wanderer is a small ground-dwelling bird native to Australia. It is known for its unique appearance, with a distinctive black and white striped plumage and a compact build. This species is highly specialized for life on the open plains, with a low, camouflaged profile that helps it blend into its grassland habitat. Plains-wanderers are primarily insectivorous, foraging for small invertebrates among the grasses. They are also known for their unusual breeding system, where the female takes the lead in courtship and the male takes on the majority of parental care. Due to habitat loss and fragmentation, the Plains-wanderer faces conservation challenges.
