Prothonotary Warbler

Protonotaria citrea

The Prothonotary Warbler is a small, vibrant songbird with a striking golden-yellow plumage and a distinctive blue-gray back. These warblers are known for their preference for nesting in cavities near water, often in swamps, marshes, and floodplain forests. They are highly territorial during the breeding season and are known for their loud, melodious songs. Prothonotary Warblers primarily feed on insects and can be observed foraging in the lower parts of trees and shrubs. Their populations are vulnerable to habitat loss and degradation, particularly in their wintering grounds in Central and South America.
