Puaiohi

Melamprosops phaeosoma

The Puaiohi, also known as the Small Kauai Thrush, is a critically endangered bird species endemic to the island of Kauai in Hawaii. It is a medium-sized thrush with a brownish-gray plumage, a slightly curved bill, and a white belly. Puaiohi are known for their melodious songs and are primarily insectivorous, foraging in the dense undergrowth of native forests. They face significant threats from habitat loss, introduced predators, and disease, leading to a severe decline in their population. Conservation efforts are underway to protect and restore their remaining habitat and establish captive breeding programs to ensure the survival of this unique species.
