Myiarchus antillarum
The Puerto Rican Flycatcher, scientifically known as Myiarchus antillarum, is a small to medium-sized bird native to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. It is characterized by its olive-brown upperparts, yellowish underparts, and a distinct white eye ring. This species is known for its distinctive call, a sharp 'wheep' or 'whit' sound. The Puerto Rican Flycatcher is often found in open woodlands, forest edges, and scrublands, where it forages for insects by sallying from perches. It constructs cup-shaped nests in tree cavities or man-made structures. While not currently listed, its population is vulnerable due to habitat loss and human disturbance.
