Puerto Rican Screech Owl

Megascops roboratus

The Puerto Rican Screech Owl (Megascops roboratus) is a small owl species native to the island of Puerto Rico. It is known for its distinctive whinnying call that echoes through the forests at night. These owls have reddish-brown plumage with intricate patterns that provide excellent camouflage against tree bark. They primarily feed on insects, small mammals, and occasionally small birds. The Puerto Rican Screech Owl nests in tree cavities and is a nocturnal hunter, using its keen hearing and sharp talons to capture prey. Due to habitat loss and predation, the population of this species is declining, and it is classified as Endangered by the IUCN.
