Puerto Rican Woodpecker, Melanerpes portoricensis, is a woodpecker of Puerto Rico and the only resident member of Picidae on the island. It is common on the main island and scarce on Vieques. The species is the only woodpecker found only in the Puerto Rican archipelago. It occurs in forests, coffee plantations, mangroves, palm groves, parks and gardens. Males and females differ in plumage, with the male showing brighter throat and breast markings, and the sexes also differ in bill length.
