These woodpeckers are commonly found in forests, woodlands, and urban areas across the island. They use their strong bills to excavate cavities in trees for nesting and foraging. The Puerto Rican Woodpecker primarily feeds on insects, fruits, and seeds. Due to habitat loss and predation, the conservation status of this species is currently listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN.
