Purple-bellied Lory

Lorius chlorocercus

The Purple-bellied Lory (Lorius chlorocercus) is a striking parrot species found in the lowland rainforests of New Guinea. These colorful birds are known for their vibrant plumage, with a bright red head, purple belly, and green wings. They are highly social and often form large flocks, displaying remarkable acrobatic flight patterns. Their diet primarily consists of nectar, pollen, fruits, and seeds. The Purple-bellied Lory plays a vital role in pollination and seed dispersal within its habitat. Unfortunately, due to habitat loss and trapping for the pet trade, their population is declining, and they are classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN.
