Lophornis helenae

The Purple-crowned Fairy is a striking hummingbird species found in the highlands of Costa Rica and western Panama. It is distinguished by its iridescent green plumage, a vibrant purple crown, and a deeply forked tail. These tiny birds are often found in montane forests and adjacent clearings, where they feed on nectar from a variety of flowers and occasionally catch small insects. They are known for their agile flight and their distinctive high-pitched vocalizations. The Purple-crowned Fairy plays an important role in pollination within its habitat and is a delight to observe for birdwatchers and researchers alike.
