Purple Finch

Haemorhous purpureus

The Purple Finch is a small bird with a conical bill and a distinctive raspberry-red plumage on the males. Females and immature birds have more subdued brown and white plumage. These finches are known for their musical and warbling songs, often heard in coniferous and mixed woodlands during the breeding season. They are seed-eaters and can be observed at bird feeders in suburban areas during the winter. The Purple Finch is a migratory bird, breeding in the northern parts of North America and wintering in the southern United States. Their population is stable, but they are vulnerable to habitat loss and climate change.
