Purple Heron

Ardea purpurea

The Purple Heron (Ardea purpurea) is a large, elegant wading bird found in wetland habitats across Europe, Asia, and Africa. With its long neck, dagger-like bill, and striking plumage, the Purple Heron is a majestic sight as it stalks through shallow waters in search of fish, amphibians, and insects. During the breeding season, these birds construct large stick nests in reedbeds or trees, where they raise their young. Their distinctive call, a deep croak, can often be heard echoing across their wetland habitats. Despite facing threats from habitat loss and disturbance, the Purple Heron's populations are currently stable.
