Purple Indigobird

Vidua purpurascens

The Purple Indigobird (Vidua purpurascens) is a small songbird found in sub-Saharan Africa. The male has a striking glossy purple plumage with a distinctive V-shaped white patch on its wings. During the breeding season, the male performs a courtship display to attract females by fluffing up its feathers and singing a complex song. This species is a brood parasite, laying its eggs in the nests of other bird species, particularly waxbills. The Purple Indigobird is often found in grasslands, savannas, and agricultural areas, where it feeds on seeds and insects. Despite some habitat loss, it is currently considered to be of Least Concern by the IUCN.
