Purple Sandpiper

Calidris maritima

The Purple Sandpiper is a small shorebird with a mottled brownish-grey plumage and a slightly down-curved bill. It breeds in the Arctic and winters along rocky coastlines, where it forages for invertebrates in the intertidal zone. This species is known for its ability to withstand harsh weather conditions and is often found in exposed, rocky habitats. During the breeding season, it nests on the ground in rocky areas, and its cryptic plumage provides camouflage. The Purple Sandpiper is a resilient species, but it faces threats from habitat degradation and disturbance in its breeding and wintering grounds.
