Purplish Jacamar, Galbula chalcothorax, is a bird of western Amazonia in South America, recorded from Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. It belongs to the jacamar family and was described by Sclater in 1855. In the field it is best recognised by the male’s dark green head and face with a blue gloss, together with upperparts and breast that range from metallic reddish purple to coppery red. The throat is white, while the belly looks black and white speckled. The female has a yellow-brown or buff throat and belly.
