Galbula chalcothorax
The Purplish Jacamar is a striking bird found in the tropical forests of South America. It is known for its vibrant plumage, with a glossy purplish-blue crown, green upperparts, and a rufous belly. This species is a skilled aerial hunter, feeding on insects caught in mid-air. It has a distinctive call, often heard in the early morning and late afternoon. The Purplish Jacamar nests in burrows dug into steep earth banks, where it lays its eggs. Despite its bright colors, it can be difficult to spot due to its preference for perching high in the canopy.
