Sitta pygmaea
The Pygmy Nuthatch is a small songbird found in the western United States and parts of Canada. It is known for its distinctive high-pitched calls and acrobatic foraging behavior. These social birds often form large flocks and are commonly found in coniferous forests, where they forage for insects and seeds by moving nimbly along tree branches and trunks. The Pygmy Nuthatch is easily recognized by its blue-gray upperparts, white underparts, and a distinctive black stripe through the eye. It is a cavity nester, often utilizing old woodpecker holes for nesting. Despite facing threats from habitat loss and climate change, the Pygmy Nuthatch population remains stable.
