Pygmy Piculet

Picumnus pygmaeus

The Pygmy Piculet (Picumnus pygmaeus) is a tiny woodpecker found in the tropical forests of South America. Measuring only 8-9 cm in length, this diminutive bird has a distinctive black and white plumage with a red crown in males and a brown crown in females. It forages for insects and grubs on small branches and twigs, using its short bill to peck and probe for food. The Pygmy Piculet nests in tree cavities and is often found in mixed-species flocks with other small birds. Despite its small size, this species is known for its energetic and active behavior.
