Red-and-black Grosbeak, Periporphyrus erythromelas, is a bird of South America’s northern Amazonian region, recorded in Brazil, French Guiana, Guyana, Suriname and Venezuela. It belongs to the Cardinalidae family and was first described by Gmelin in 1789. This species is tied to mature humid terra firme and várzea forest, where it occurs from eastern Venezuela through the Guianas into north-eastern Brazil, with inland records along the Amazon as far as western Pará. It is a sedentary resident and is known for its heavy bill and the strong black-and-red pattern shown by the male.
