Red-banded Fruiteater, Pipreola whitelyi, is a bird of the tepui region in South America, where eastern Venezuela, western Guyana and northern Brazil meet. It belongs to the cotingas and was described by Salvin & Godman in 1884. It lives in humid montane forest, especially thick secondary growth with a mossy understorey and Melastomataceae below. The species is a year-round resident. It is one of the most distinctive members of Pipreola, and the sexes differ strongly in plumage. The nominate form and P. w. kathleenae are recognised, with the latter found in southeastern Venezuela.
